School Profile

San Remo Primary School was first opened on March 26th, 1874. Situated in the San Remo township, at the eastern entrance of Westernport, it has a long tradition of serving the local communities of San Remo and Phillip Island. The school was moved to its existing site in 1948 and currently has an enrolment of 143 students. There are a number of independent and state schools in close proximity. We draw on children from a wide area which incorporates three preschools.

Guiding Principles

San Remo Primary is a small rural school which embraces difference and caters for a wide range and types of abilities. San Remo’s philosophy is firmly based on the belief that every student has the ability to learn and that this best occurs in a flexible, happy and positive environment. The school encourages students to become active, independent learners who are able to participate in a co-operative classroom environment. It encourages students to grow in self confidence and esteem and to take pride in everything they set out to achieve. A notable aspect of the school is the welcoming atmosphere, the open and approachable nature of staff members and the positive attitude to student welfare.

San Remo Primary School offers a seven year sequential program in each of the Domains. Particular emphasis is placed on literacy and numeracy. Children also participate in a variety of school sports, camps and excursions In addition, special programs to support the curriculum include Reading Intervention, Early Years, Middle Years, Perceptual Motor Program, Recycling, Sun Smart Program, Big Buddy - Little Buddy System and a Biennial School Play. Parents are an important part of our school community and we are supported by their assistance in many activities. Parents are also involved in School Council and its sub-committees, curriculum policy development and the Fund Raising Committee. The before school, after school, and vacation care program provides an extra facility for parents.

The school comprises an administration building, four classrooms, a junior learning centre with three classrooms room, a library, art room and multi purpose room housing music and OSHC. There is an adventure playground, along with a tree house, in our award winning grounds. The school has school hours use of the adjacent San Remo Recreation Centre. This excellent facility offers courts for basketball / netball, squash and tennis and storage space for the school’s sporting equipment.

Parental Involvement

Parents and Staff work together at SRPS for the benefit of all children. We believe the best education is one based on a partnership of mutual trust and respect between home and school.

Parental involvement is welcomed and encouraged in all aspects of school life, whether this be reading, helping in the classroom, assisting with excursions, working bees or being involved in fund raising activities.

San Remo is a friendly school community and during the year there will be many opportunities for you to become involved in the life of the school.

We actively keep abreast of current educational trends and of societal needs. We acknowledge the need to encourage our students to access information from a range of sources and have provided the technology to enable the students to communicate with others via the Internet and Email.

The school community takes pride in its well developed team approach to leadership and decision making as evidenced by the collaborative approach at School Council and staff meetings.

The staff take part in a range of professional development programs that allow them to provide the best possible learning environment for the range of students in their care. Regular program reviews along with ongoing student evaluation ensures that planning is effective and purposeful.

Our school is a place where children, staff and parents and the local community work together to ensure an optimum learning environment. We work in co-operation to achieve agreed goals in order to ensure excellence in our learning and growth.
